I’ve been asked on a few occasions by clients to disable the right-click feature on their websites in order to protect their images from would-be thieves.

Whilst doing this will probably deter the most casual of visitors, it is by no means a perfect solution (not even close).

The purpose of this post is simply to make you aware that you cannot protect your content if it’s online.

If somebody is looking at your website, then your content is already in their

computer. A web page and its contents need to be downloaded by a computer before it can be displayed on the screen.

Many people are unaware of this fact, and in this case disabling the right click feature will put off some of them, but the code that disables the right click feature will only work as long as JavaScript is enabled on the browser.

In other words, if the visitor’s browser doesn’t have JavaScript enabled they will be able to right click and save the images on your website.

The best solution that in my opinion goes a long way to protect your images, is to place a watermark on each of your images. A small, see-through logo in the corner of each picture will render them unusable to anybody wishing to copy your images and pass them off as their own content.

If you are interested in using code to disable the right-click feature on your website, you can use the following code ( replacing your body tag):

<body onload=”;init_start(); ” id=”bodytag” oncontextmenu=”return false;” >
